Root Canal Treatment
What is a root canal treatment?
A root canal treatment involves the repairing of the inside of your teeth. Known as endodontic treatment, the dental procedure requires drilling into the tooth (or teeth), and removing the soft inner core, or dental pulp. The cavity is then filled, and resealed.

Root canal treatment or tooth extraction?
Your dentist might suggest root canal treatment when there is a chance of saving a badly infected tooth. Your dentist will look for signs of tooth decay, gum disease, cracked fillings or tooth injuries.
Patients with the following symptoms might be ideal candidates for root canal treatment.
- Toothache when biting or chewing
- Sensitive Teeth when eating hot or cold foods
- Darkening of the tooth
- Swollen or tender gums
- Pus around the infection
- Swelling of the face or neck
- Loosening of the teeth
Where the tooth cannot be saved, a tooth extraction may be recommended.

What can I expect from root canal treatment?
A root canal treatment starts with an inspection of the teeth and gums, followed by an x-ray to determine the condition of the root canals, and to identify infection in the bone around the tooth.
Using a local anaesthetic, the dentist will numb the areas around the tooth. Once the anaesthetic kicks in, the dentist will drill a hole in the tooth to remove the pulp. Our teeth have 1 to 4 root canals, and they will all be cleaned, shaped and disinfected.
Once all the canals have been filled, the dentist will seal the tooth, and maybe even crown the tooth, where necessary.
Following the root canal procedure, you will regain full use of the tooth, and there is no reason why it can’t last a lifetime.
There are many complications that can arise from infected tooth pulp. If left untreated, the tooth pulp may:
- Spread infection
- Bone erosion, and bone loss
- You may lose your tooth
